Raised loft boarding over full-depth insulation

Loft boarding in Inverness & the Highlands

Newer estates around Inverness and the dormer bungalows across the Highlands often have usable lofts. We board them on legs so the insulation you need up north stays at full depth.

We cover Inverness, Nairn, Dingwall, Fort William, Aviemore, Ullapool and Kyle of Lochalsh. More about our work in Inverness & the Highlands.

How we board a loft

Most lofts are boarded the wrong way: chipboard screwed straight onto the joists, squashing the insulation down to the joist height. Crushed insulation loses most of its performance and boards sitting on it can trap moisture.

  • Insulation first: we measure what's there and top it up to the depth the loft needs.
  • Raised deck: loft legs or a timber sub-frame lift the boards above the insulation, with an air gap underneath.
  • Boards: 18mm tongue-and-groove loft panels, screwed down, level and solid.
  • Access: loft ladders, enlarged or insulated hatches and a light if you want one.

Loft boarding questions

Do you do loft boarding in Inverness & the Highlands?

Yes. We fit raised loft boarding, ladders and hatches across Inverness & the Highlands, starting with a free survey.

Can I board straight onto the joists?

Not without crushing the insulation. Joists are usually around 100mm deep and the insulation a loft needs is much deeper, so we raise the deck on legs.

How long does loft boarding take?

A storage area around the hatch is usually half a day; a full loft is one to two days.

Can you top up the insulation at the same time?

Yes, and we'd recommend it. The top-up may be grant-funded if you qualify; the boarding itself isn't.
