A huge share of Scotland's homes are solid stone or old brick: tenements, cottages, crofts, villas and farmhouses. Those walls were built to get wet and dry out again. Line them with foil-backed boards and plastic, and the moisture that used to escape gets trapped against the stone, which is how damp, mould and rotten timbers start behind new insulation.
Wood fibre works with the building instead. It's vapour-open, it buffers moisture, and it adds real thermal mass, so rooms stay warmer in winter and cooler on hot days. It's also made from timber by-products, so it stores carbon rather than using fossil fuel to make.
As joiners, we do the whole job: framing, membranes, boards, service battens, plasterboard, and refitting skirtings, architraves and reveals. See a stone croft on Skye we insulated in wood fibre, stage by stage.
Wood fibre is made from timber offcuts pressed into boards and flexible batts. It's vapour-open, so moisture can pass through it and dry out, and it can take up and release moisture without losing much of its insulating value. That's exactly what solid stone and older brick walls need.
It costs more than foil-backed PIR, and it's thicker for the same result. On stone, it's worth it. See a Skye croft house we did in wood fibre.

Yes. We supply and fit wood fibre insulation across Scotland, with a free survey first to check the walls or roof are right for it.
It's one of the best options. It lets the wall dry through the insulation, where foil-backed boards can trap moisture against the stone.
Yes, usually more than mineral wool or PIR, and it's thicker for the same heat loss. On old stone buildings, the lower damp risk is why people choose it.
Grants fund the measure, such as internal wall insulation, rather than a brand of material. If you qualify, we'll tell you what's covered.
