Wood fibre insulation boards on a stone wall

Wood fibre insulation in Renfrewshire & Inverclyde

Paisley's sandstone tenements and the hillside terraces of Greenock and Gourock take the full force of west-coast rain. Wood fibre on the inside lets those walls keep drying.

We cover Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone, Erskine, Greenock, Port Glasgow and Gourock. More about our work in Renfrewshire & Inverclyde.

How we use wood fibre

Wood fibre is made from timber offcuts pressed into boards and flexible batts. It's vapour-open, so moisture can pass through it and dry out, and it can take up and release moisture without losing much of its insulating value. That's exactly what solid stone and older brick walls need.

  • Internal walls: boards on a framed or battened wall with a breathable membrane, then plasterboard or lime plaster.
  • Rooms in the roof: between and under the rafters, where its weight also keeps attic rooms cooler in summer.
  • Lofts and floors: flexible batts between joists where a natural option is wanted.

It costs more than foil-backed PIR, and it's thicker for the same result. On stone, it's worth it. See a Skye croft house we did in wood fibre.

Wood fibre insulation questions

Is wood fibre insulation available in Renfrewshire & Inverclyde?

Yes. We supply and fit wood fibre insulation across Renfrewshire & Inverclyde, with a free survey first to check the walls or roof are right for it.

Is wood fibre good for stone walls?

It's one of the best options. It lets the wall dry through the insulation, where foil-backed boards can trap moisture against the stone.

Is it more expensive than other insulation?

Yes, usually more than mineral wool or PIR, and it's thicker for the same heat loss. On old stone buildings, the lower damp risk is why people choose it.

Can I get a grant for wood fibre insulation?

Grants fund the measure, such as internal wall insulation, rather than a brand of material. If you qualify, we'll tell you what's covered.
