Granite holds the cold, and a breathable wood fibre lining on the inside of a granite wall is one of the few ways to warm it without trapping moisture against the stone. It suits the West End, Rosemount and Ferryhill terraces as much as the villas in Cults.
We cover Aberdeen, Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Inverurie, Stonehaven, Banchory and Ellon. More about our work in Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire.
Recent job, Aberdeen: wood fibre boards between the floor joists, laid over a breathable membrane and sealed at the walls.
Wood fibre is made from timber offcuts pressed into boards and flexible batts. It's vapour-open, so moisture can pass through it and dry out, and it can take up and release moisture without losing much of its insulating value. That's exactly what solid stone and older brick walls need.
It costs more than foil-backed PIR, and it's thicker for the same result. On stone, it's worth it. See a Skye croft house we did in wood fibre.
★★★★★Scot-Therm did an amazing job of our cavity walls and loft insulation. So helpful, quick, and hardly left a trace. Could not recommend them enough.
★★★★★Really impressed with Scottherm Insulation. The installers were organised, tidy, and clearly took pride in their work.
Yes. We supply and fit wood fibre insulation across Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire, with a free survey first to check the walls or roof are right for it.
It's one of the best options. It lets the wall dry through the insulation, where foil-backed boards can trap moisture against the stone.
Yes, usually more than mineral wool or PIR, and it's thicker for the same heat loss. On old stone buildings, the lower damp risk is why people choose it.
Grants fund the measure, such as internal wall insulation, rather than a brand of material. If you qualify, we'll tell you what's covered.
