A big extension on a Grange villa, insulated from the ground up: under the floor slab, in the suspended timber floor, through every wall and across the flat roof. One team, one job, joinery and insulation together.
An extension to a house in The Grange, one of Edinburgh's best-known villa streets, built to a standard where every surface that touches the outside had to be insulated properly. We covered the floor, the walls and the roof.
Rigid PIR boards laid over the damp-proof membrane, with the reinforcing mesh set on spacers above, ready for the concrete. Insulating under the slab is the only chance you get: once it's poured, it's done.
Where the new floor ties into the old house on timber joists, mineral wool fitted snugly between every joist before the boards went down.
PIR boards cut tight between the studs across every external wall, and the joints taped so there are no gaps for heat or air.
PIR boards fixed across the whole deck under a temporary roof, so the insulation stayed dry until the waterproofing went on.

Walls boarded, floor joists filled with mineral wool.

Every joint taped. The gaps are where the heat goes.

On an extension, the heat escapes at the joins: where the floor meets the wall, the wall meets the roof, and the new build meets the old house. When different trades do each part, those junctions fall between them. As joiners we built and insulated all of it, so the joins were done properly.
