Room-in-roof insulation in Dunbartonshire

1930s bungalows in Bearsden and Kirkintilloch with converted attics, and villas with rooms in the roof, often have cold sloping ceilings.

We cover Clydebank, Dumbarton, Alexandria, Bearsden, Milngavie and Kirkintilloch. More about our work in Dunbartonshire.

What we insulate

A room in the roof loses heat through five surfaces: the sloping coombs, the flat ceiling above, the dwarf walls, the gables and the eaves spaces behind the dwarf walls. Most are bare or barely insulated.

  • Coombs: PIR or wood fibre between the rafters with a ventilation gap, plus a layer under the rafters to stop cold bridging.
  • Dwarf walls and gables: insulated and boarded on the cold side.
  • Eaves and flat ceiling: mineral wool or wool to the depth each needs.

Then plasterboard, ready for skim. It's joinery from start to finish, which is what we do. More on room-in-roof insulation.

Room-in-roof insulation questions

Do you do room-in-roof insulation in Dunbartonshire?

Yes. We insulate attic rooms, coombed ceilings and loft conversions across Dunbartonshire, starting with a free survey.

Do the ceilings have to come down?

Usually the sloping ceilings do, to insulate between the rafters properly. Sometimes we can insulate over sound plasterboard at the cost of a little headroom.

How long does it take?

Two to five days for a typical attic room, depending on size and how much needs stripping out.

Is room-in-roof insulation grant-funded?

It's an eligible measure under Scottish schemes for qualifying households. We'll check for you.
