Recycled-glass Earthwool loft insulation fitted by ScotTherm

Eco-friendly insulation in Argyll & Bute

With much of Argyll off the gas grid, the greenest step is burning less oil. Natural, breathable insulation on the older stone houses does that without creating damp in a wet climate.

We cover Oban, Helensburgh, Dunoon, Campbeltown, Rothesay and Lochgilphead. More about our work in Argyll & Bute.

The materials we use

  • Knauf Earthwool: mineral wool made largely from recycled glass, with a plant-based binder and no added formaldehyde. Our everyday choice for lofts and floors.
  • Wood fibre: made from timber offcuts, breathable, and the best option for stone walls and attic rooms.
  • ThermaFleece sheep's wool: natural British wool, breathable and safe to handle, ideal for older roofs.

The most environmentally friendly thing insulation does is cut how much heating you use. The second is lasting: breathable materials on old buildings avoid the damp problems that lead to insulation being ripped out. That's why we never install spray foam in homes.

Eco-friendly insulation questions

Do you offer eco-friendly insulation in Argyll & Bute?

Yes. We fit recycled-glass Earthwool, wood fibre and sheep's wool across Argyll & Bute, and recommend the right one for your house at a free survey.

What is the most eco-friendly insulation?

It depends on the house. Wood fibre and sheep's wool are natural and breathable; Earthwool is mostly recycled glass and very efficient. The best one is the one that suits your walls and roof and lasts.

Is spray foam eco-friendly?

We don't install it in homes. It can trap moisture against roof timbers and is very hard to remove, which is why many lenders won't accept it.

Are there grants for eco insulation?

Yes, if you qualify. Grants fund insulation measures, and we can often use natural materials within them.
