A natural, breathable build-up in a Barnton house: flexible wood fibre between the studs, an intelligent vapour membrane over it, and rigid wood fibre boards fixed straight to the masonry wall.
The owners wanted their walls insulated with natural materials that would let the building breathe, rather than foil-faced boards. We used wood fibre throughout.
Flexible wood fibre batts cut to fit tightly between the studs of the framed walls.
A SIGA Majrex membrane across the warm side. It controls moisture from the room in winter but lets the wall dry out towards the inside in summer, which suits a breathable build-up.
On the solid walls, rigid wood fibre boards fixed directly to the masonry with thermal fixings, ready for the next layer.
Taped, sealed and ready for plasterboard, with the room kept liveable as we went.

Wood fibre boards fixed to the masonry.
Wood fibre stores moisture and releases it again without losing much of its insulating value, and it adds thermal mass so rooms stay steadier through the day. Paired with an intelligent membrane, it gives a wall that insulates well and can still dry out. Wood fibre insulation in Edinburgh · Wood fibre insulation specialists
