Cavity wall insulation in North Berwick

A rendered house by the coast with an empty cavity. This one shows the bit most people never see: the borescope going in first, and what an empty cavity looks like on the screen before we agree to fill it.

The house

A detached house in North Berwick with a rendered finish over cavity block, a suspended timber floor with air bricks at low level, and composite decking right up to the wall. Coastal East Lothian gets the wind and rain off the Forth, so before anything is quoted on a house like this we need to know the cavity is clear, dry and wide enough.

What we did

  1. Borescope survey

A small hole drilled through the render and the camera fed in. This one showed a clean, empty cavity with sound block on both leaves and no rubble or old material. That's the green light. If the screen shows damp, debris or an old fill, we stop and talk.

  2. Drill pattern

Holes drilled on a set grid across the elevation, tighter around the windows, doors and at the eaves so no section is left short.

  3. Bead injection

Bonded EPS beads blown in under pressure from the bottom up, hose worked up the ladder section by section until each area is full.

  4. Make good and tidy

Holes filled and finished to blend with the render, decking brushed off, air bricks checked clear. The house looked as it did when we arrived, only warmer.

Why the survey is the job

Cavity wall insulation has a bad name in parts of Scotland, and the reason is nearly always the same: walls filled without checking whether they should have been. A borescope survey takes ten minutes and it's the difference between a warm house and a damp one. We won't fill a wall we haven't looked inside.

On this house the cavity was textbook, so the fill was straightforward and done in a day. If yours isn't, we'll tell you, and quote for internal wall insulation instead.
