Loft insulation in Inverness: two layers, cross-laid

A modern trussed loft with too little in it. This one needed two 150mm layers of Knauf Earthwool: the first between the ceiling ties, the second laid across them. Eaves kept clear, downlights covered, done in a morning.

The loft

A newer trussed roof in Inverness, OSB sarking, tight eaves and a run of recessed downlights in the ceiling below. The existing insulation was thin and patchy, which is normal for houses of this age: enough to pass at the time, nowhere near what the loft needs to keep the heat in through a Highland winter.

What we did

  1. Survey and measure

Depth checked across the loft, eaves ventilation path identified, every downlight located. This loft needed two layers to get to the right depth.

  2. First 150mm layer between the ties

Knauf Earthwool cut to fit snugly between the ceiling ties, pushed right out to the eaves but stopped short of blocking the ventilation gap at the roof edge.

  3. Fire covers over the downlights

Every recessed light got a fire-rated cover before the second layer went on. Insulation over an uncovered downlight is a fire risk, and it's the step that gets skipped when a loft is done cheaply.

  4. Second 150mm layer across

Laid at right angles over the ties so the timbers don't act as cold bridges. That's the layer that turns a tick-box job into a warm house.

Why two layers

Ceiling ties on a truss are typically only around 100mm deep, so one layer between them can't get anywhere near the depth a loft needs. A second layer across the top covers the timbers and closes the gaps. Every loft is different, which is why we measure first and decide the depth for that house, but on a trussed roof like this one two layers is nearly always the answer.

Knauf Earthwool is what we use on most lofts: made from recycled glass, no itch, no formaldehyde binder, and it holds its depth for decades.
