It slows the transfer of heat between your living space and the outside, keeping the house warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Which one suits your loft depends on access, whether the roof is pitched or the loft is converted, and what's already there. The survey tells us.

The most common and cost-effective option. Rolls of mineral wool such as Knauf Earthwool laid between and across the joists. Easiest to fit and the all-purpose choice for most lofts, but not suitable for insulating the roof slope itself.
Rigid PIR boards fitted between the rafters. The best solution for insulating the underside of the roof, room-in-roof conversions and sloping ceilings. Can be boarded over and decorated.
ThermaFleece British sheep's wool. A natural, breathable, premium option with excellent heat retention and acoustic properties. Popular in older and period properties.
Loose material such as cellulose or mineral wool blown between the joists. Useful for lofts that are very hard to access, but it can be messy, isn't always secure in a draughty loft, and must be done by a professional. Rarely our first recommendation.
We don't install spray foam in domestic properties. It traps moisture against timbers, is very difficult to remove and can make a house hard to mortgage or sell.

Cost depends mostly on the size of the loft and whether it's a top-up or a full install. A small semi-detached is obviously very different from a large detached house, and access, existing boarding and the material you choose all play a part.
Whatever the outlay, loft insulation typically pays for itself within a few years and then it's all savings. According to the Energy Saving Trust it can knock a meaningful amount off annual bills, and if you qualify for a grant the cost may be covered entirely.

Every house is different. The right depth depends on joist size, ventilation, how the loft is used and what's already there. Many older homes have 100mm or less, which is well below what's needed and usually qualifies for a top-up. We measure and tell you.

We don't recommend it. Lofts often have areas that aren't freely accessible, insulation has to be fitted correctly between and over joists, and ventilation and wiring need to be handled properly. A poor DIY job can cause condensation problems.
